Animal Welfare Association of Iceland
The Animal Welfare Association of Iceland (DÍS) was founded on 13 July 1914 and is a non-governmental organization (NGO) dedicated to improving animal welfare in Iceland.
For more than a century, DÍS has worked to promote the humane treatment, protection and welfare of animals. We believe that animal welfare is a matter of public concern and that the way a society treats animals is an important reflection of that society.
Our work is based on the belief that animals deserve to be treated with respect, compassion, and care, and that strong legislation, effective oversight, education, and public awareness are essential to protecting their welfare.
Through our work, we aim to contribute to a society in which animal welfare is recognized as an important part of responsible and compassionate citizenship.
The main role of the organization:
To work towards improving animal welfare and actively participate in public discussions on animal welfare issues.
To monitor the implementation and enforcement of animal welfare legislation and advocate for strong legislation and effective public oversight to ensure the protection of animals.
To promote education and provide information on the proper treatment and welfare of animals, and to encourage schools, non-profit organizations, and individuals to actively support animal welfare.
A long-standing voice for animals in Iceland
Founded in 1914, DÍS has a long history of working for animals in Iceland.
Over the years, the organization has contributed to raising awareness of animal welfare and has advocated for improvements in the protection of animals through legislation, public discussion, and education.
While the challenges facing animals and society continue to change, our fundamental goal remains the same: to improve the welfare and protection of animals in Iceland.
